Spotlight on South Africa
South Africa’s huge disparity in housing standards in South Africa – from shanty towns to luxury mansions – has astonished Executive Director Michael McLean. He also noticed residential trends are favouring townhouses and apartments, with housing loan interest rates at 15% to 19%. It’s become common to construct some homes over 2-4 year periods to help pay for them. To increase competition in the construction industry, South African government agencies intend to limit the number of contracts to dominant builders and encourage more employment of indigenous labour.
