  4. Acting Director

    Master Builders Director Michael McLean will be on leave in South Africa for the next three weeks. Graeme Dix has been appointed Acting Director.

  5. State Budget 2017

    Treasurer Ben Wyatt released the McGowan Government’s Budget for 2017-18 last week. There were a few surprises and a few disappointments, especially the increase in payroll tax for larger businesses. Click here for MBA’s summary.

  8. National Awards

    Master Builders’ national awards judging takes place in Canberra next week. Robert Shaw will, once again, be representing WA on the judging panel. Good luck to all members who have been nominated. The winning entries will be announced at Master Builders’ national awards in Hobart on Saturday, November 25. Click here to attend.

  9. 40 under 40 awards

    Master Builders is nominating Wilson Hui from Prompt Engineering, the 2016 Ric New Medalist, for a Business News 40 Under 40 Award this year. We wish him well.

  10. External Cladding Regulations

    Four Corners on ABC has highlighted several important regulatory issues with regard to non-conforming/compliant external aluminium cladding. A Senate Committee made 8 recommendations to deal with the problem. Master Builders Expert Committee met in Melbourne last Friday and discussed the need for better product information, third-party certification, greater regulatory oversight and free access to reference standards. More research is being done on this vexed issue.

  11. Leadership in Workplace Health and Wellbeing

    October is Safe Work Month. Healthier Workplaces is hosting a free “Lunch & Learn” panel session for managers and safety co-ordinators on October 4 at Perth City Library. Click here to attend. The Work Safety Awards will be presented at the University Club on October 6 from 7:30am.

  12. Statistically Speaking

    The Australian economy grew by 1.9% in 2016-17, with household consumption growing by 2.6%. Dwelling investment was up 2.5%, while capital expenditure was expected to grow 5% in 2017-18. New private business investment has grown over the past three quarters, which indicates a positive outlook for our industry over the next six months.

  13. Donations Greatly Appreciated for a Good Cause

    Kitchen appliances (oven, range hood, dishwasher, fridge) and gyprock fixers are needed to complete the next stage of the Rafferty Family’s home in Helena Valley. Peter Rafferty was 47 when he tragically passed away after being diagnosed with mesothelioma. His widow, Bec, is still trying to complete the home they started building for their children and foster children.   14. Prostate Cancer Webcast

    More than 20,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men. Join the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia on September 20, (during International Prostate Cancer Awareness Month) for a free, online Q&A webcast with a panel of leading health experts who’ll address this important issue.
