Safety Awareness Induction Training Changes to Regulations

WorkSafe scraps SAT refresher training
WorkSafe WA has advised, as of 31 July 2009, there is NO longer a requirement for refresher training to be undertaken for Safety Awareness Training (SAT) in the construction industry in Western Australia.

Master Builders strongly opposed this decision, as did the construction unions, but Troy Buswell determined WA would adopt a national position on induction training in the construction industry which has no refresher training. This was endorsed by other building industry employer groups.

What does this mean?
Those construction workers with "current" SAT cards that have been previously issued remain valid "for life" under the changes to the Regulations.

New entrants to the construction industry will still have to undertake SAT training if working on a construction site.

The National Code of Practice provides an option for employers to consider repeat training if the employee has been out of the industry for more than 2 years, or if necessary, as part of their safety management process.

New national induction training course
A new national course for induction training will commence across Australia on the 1 September. CPCCOHS1001A Work Safely in the construction industry is a nationally accredited course. People who complete this new unit of competence in WA will be issued with a white card. People who have previously completed the SAT course will not have to repeat the training. Both current Safely Awareness Training (Blue) card and the new White Card will be accepted across all States and Territories.

Acceptance of cards from different states
South Australia's White card and Queensland's Blue and White cards are accepted under a reciprocal agreement.

Please call Master Builders on 9441 8000 should there be any enquiries on this matter.
